The ice maker suddenly stopped making ice. I could feel frozen water in the mold tray. It was time to clean out the refrigerator anyway so I shut it off, let everything get warm and cleaned out the whole thing. I removed the ice maker, inspected it and put it back in.

After turning it back on, the mold tray filled with water, and produced one cycle (about 6 cubes) of ice. After that, no more ice is produced.

My thinking is that the heater is not working.

Wait, I just remove the ice maker again and there was NO ice in the mold tray but I noticed the water inlet at the top was frozen. Not sure why all of a sudden that would start freezing up. Is there something supposed to keep that from freezing?

The water inlet valve on the back of unit opens when the ice maker needs water. If the valve doesn't seal good because of sediment or wear it will continue to drip and when the water reaches the ice maker supply tube it will freeze. You can take the tube off the valve and watch to see if it drips.

Thanks woodchuckie. I have it apart now. I'm not sure how to get the tube off the valve. I don't want to break it. There is a little black insert that surrounds the tube and appears to be inserted into the valve. I'm not sure if I just need to pull hard on the tube.

Ok - I figured that out. Got the tube for the ice maker out of the valve. No dripping that I could see. Left the tube out, turned on the water and plugged in the fridge to see if water would come out of the valve. No water coming out. I assume the ice maker is calling for water and the valve should open up and water come out. But I can't be sure the ice maker is calling for water. Is there some test I can do for that?

You can swap the wires on the valve with the water dispenser wires and try the dispenser switch. the water should come out the valve then.

I was going to do that but the terminals are different sizes between the dispenser switch and the ice maker switch and it didn't just plug in. I guess I could just hot wire it. I was a little afraid to do that. Took an ohm meter reading, ohm meter reads just under 1000 across both the dispenser and ice maker terminals.

Ok - I turned of the freezer and let it get warm to make sure there was no ice in the water tube. I then turned it on and let it get cold and turned the ice maker on. No ice and the mold had no water in it. I then switched the terminals on the water valve and activated the drinking water switch. The ice tray then filled up with water.

Any idea what the problem is? Does this mean the water valve is ok?

Ice Maker Fixed - Thinking that the problem was not with the water valve, I removed the ice maker from the freezer and took off the cover of the control module on the left side. As I removed the cover, a small piece of plastic fell out. The piece that had broken off was from the shaft on which a gear is fitted. Thus, the gear was not being held in place by the shaft so I got some super glue and glued the gear directly to the shaft. Put it all back together and now it is making ice!
