my washing became smokey and burn the belt. the repair man came and said it is the clutch and he has to change the entire transmisssion. Is this true and is it worthwhile.the age of the machine is about five years

Can you post the model number for us?

Based on the limited information you have provided it seems likely the tech is correct. If you are lucky the motor will be ok, otherwise it might have to be replaced also. (smoke usually is coming from an overheating, stressed motor).

If you want a more informed opinion, please give a detailed description of what happened and how the machine was operating.
