After washing cycle is complete the dishes have what look like sand particles on the tops and some of the glasses have the sand particles inside. Can you explain why and if I can take it apart and clean the washer myself. Older model.

If unit is washing OK but not drying correctly check the water heating element in the unit.
Have you changed dishwasher soap brand lately?
Does the unit sound normal when washing? If it is quieter could be just a filter needs cleaning.
Open it up after it fills and check the water level. Most units fill to just below the heating element.
Check the temperature of the hot water from the tank. Let the water run a minute or so into a glass and then check. Should be 120 degrees, minimum.
Drain some water out of your water tank. Let it run till it is clear.
Try different cycles with temp boost on and off.
