My amana washer started making loud noise. Today open the lid and smoke came out of the drum. The water in the drum had drained out and the cloths were not damaged.

 PLEASE HELP

May 23, 2009 I'm still without a working washer. The drum is stainless steel, model number above and ser # S0112124723. Could the motor have gone bad? If I start taking the washer apart what should I look for. I really need advise

Hi Longsworth

From your description it is likely the motor has gone bad, but your major problem is to determine if something jammed and made the motor go bad.

Here is the service manual on your machine.

http://www.servicematters.com/m...ary/docs/RS3100007R0.pdf

If you want to tear into it, you may find the problem pretty easily, but I am afraid the parts will cost so much that repair is not economical. I am afraid you are looking at a new or good used washer.

Good luck, and let us know what you find out and what you do.

Today I took the front off the washer and ran a cycle. No smoke however, the spin cycle should like a freight train?

I think that tends to confirm my earlier thoughts that something is jamming in the drive train.

If you feel adventuresome, take it apart. I don't think you have much to lose because if you cannot fix it you are looking at a replacement anyway.

Good luck and let us know how it turns out.

I truly appreciate the direction your given me. A couple of more questions, I did look over the manuel and I don't see where the drive train is located. Sould I be able to spin the basket freely by hand? Or is this an indication of a problem?

Thanks much

Hi

I may have confused you in that I was using the term drive train to refer to the transmission, bearings, brake assembly etc, since I cannot tell exactly where your problem is. Sorry if that was the case.

The last 10 pages or so of the manual before the appendix will take you through the process of disassembly. As you will note it is not easy, and as I said earlier, you should try it because you would have to replace the machine anyway. It's really a situation of taking things apart until you find what you think is the problem, and then deciding to order the parts and repair it, taking the risk that you may not have found all of the problem.

Also, you should be able to spin the tub, but it should not be free and loose.

Good luck.

Thank you. Now with the manuel I took the front off the washer and did a complete wash cycle. I noticed that the idler spring makes a noise.
During the spin cycle it spins louder and faster then ever before. So loud that I can hear the spinning upstairs. Is there a censor that regulates the spin cycle?

There was no smoke the washer went thru the different cycles, my concern is the spin cycle that what my wife said caused the smoke only that one time.

I appreciate and admire your perserverance but my concern at this point is more safety than anything else. Does your machine stop when you raise the lid? If not it further confirms a brake problem. However, even if it does I am not sure that between the out of control spinning and possible motor damage it is worth the risk of continuing to operate the machine. In short, I think you should either fix it or replace it. The cost of a new or good used washer is not worth taking the risks.

Good luck and let us know what you decide, but I hope it is for a newer safer machine.
