We've been in our house 3 years and I've noticed that the washer, which was here when we bought it, tends to leave lint on clothes. If I dry the clothes, often the lint will come off. But if I don't, I end up with lint-covered clothes.

I know next to nothing about these machines and maintenance: is there some lint catching piece in the machine that needs to be cleaned out periodically? If so, how do I get at it?

Any help would be appreciated!

Unusual problem, I would start by using a good quality washing machine cleaner, maybe two times and see if that helps.

If it does not take off the front panel by inserting a screw driver in the gap between the top and the front near the edges to release the clips that hold the front panel on. This will give you access to the pump and internal hoses which you can take off and clean out. Note: Water will come out when you disconnect those hoses.
