my whirlpool oven is overheating during the preheat cycle and making a ticking sound, can this be corrected? I'm afraid to use the oven.

A model number may help others help you.

If this is a unit with an electronic oven control board then the ticking sound is a mystery so you may want to track this down to a part in the unit.
