My "oldie but goodie" spare fridge :) needs refrigerant. :( Trouble is, the fitting to the compressor is a smaller size than today's equipment. It's about 3/8" and needs a long piece to get into the valve. Where can I find one? Or what alternate method can I use? Symptoms are loss of cooling in both fridge and freezer, although runs well and still cools some. There is frost buildup in frost-free freezer. It hasn't lost anymore, so must not have a continuous leak. I'd be so happy if I could just "fill 'er up" and get a few more miles out of her. Not worth a service call, but too good to toss into a landfill. Thank you ever so.

In most areas you have to be a certified tech to work with freon. Where I live you cannot even buy it unless you are certified. There is frost buildup in frost-free freezer If the frost is fairly even over the evaporator coils then your problem is probably not low freon. If the frost/ice build up is enough that the evaporator fan cannot suck/blow air through the coils you have a defrost problem. Below has examples of low freon http://www.applianceaid.com/frig_notcold.html Take a look at the example pictures half way down the page. |
