Hi Folks,

Nubie on the forum but not to electrical/mechanical repair. Wife purchased a used frig for her brother. Trusted neighbor sold us the unit and stated up front that although the unit functioned normally that there was a noise in the freezer compt. Unit worked as advertised - cooled well with a little fan noise. In the process of super cleaning the unit for my brother in law I decided to go ahead and replace the worn fan. I failed to notice the intended location of a loose green wire with a pinch clamp type terminal so left it loose and fired the unit up. For several minutes the unit ran quietly and the freezer was cooling so I went off to another project. Later I returned to check the unit again and everything stopped. Nothing working but the interior light. Got to have something to do with that wire and YES the green ground wire is attached to the fan mtr assy. In the few minutes that it worked okay I did check for airflow from the new fan - it had airflow blowing out of the vents. Any ideas about that green wire?
This is a basic (small) top freezer model with ice maker. I can get the model number if needed - just requires a trip across town where the unit is located.

Thanks for whatever help you can render.

Sounds to me like it just went into a defrost cycle.which usually lasts about half an hour and then it should come back on.

Could be that it was attached to the back of the evaporator cover to ensure that it is grounded

Just came back from checking the frig - the ice tray was full and upper/lower boxes cold. You were right - the unit simply went into defrost mode and the timing of which casued me to look for a problem. That loose wire likely goes to the metal back panel like you said.

Thanks for your response.
