I have an Amana washer model number ALW880QAW. For a couple years, every now and then it wont spin/agitate and if it is left that way, it starts to smell and/or smoke. The belt is in good condition and I cannot figure out where the smell comes from. Usually, I shut it off and let it sit for a while and it works fine after that. I've now had it off for about 45 minutes and it still won't start up. Would this most likely be the coupler or the capacitor? I doubt it's the motor since it's been doing this off and on for so long.

Remove the bottom access panel and check the belt and its tension. If there is nothing wrong then perform the troubleshooting as described in the Service manual.
