Estate washer won't spin or drain, agitate cycle grinds to halt

Fills with water, starts agitating but wihtin a few minutes, agitator starts to slow down somewhat grinding to a halt with a lot of clicking sounds and a hum in the dial selector/timer for a few seconds. I've detected a faint electrical odor. If I don't touch the dial to turn it off, after about 5 minutes, the agitator starts again, runs for a minute, starts to bog down with the same bit of grinding noise and clicking and then it stops.
It never makes it to the spin or drain cycle. And also, when I turn the dial to choose spin or rinse there is no response.
I've removed the pump and checked it for blockage and it looks ok.
Removed the coupler pieces and they are in tact.
Tested the lid switch for continuity and it's ok.
What's next?
How do I check the timer switch.
Is it more likely the clutch assembly, transmission, or brake or agitator? I'd like to avoid taking apart these pieces since it seems more involved.
Are there other parts I haven't mentioned that need to be troubleshooted? Thanks. Mark

Did you have any flooding? Check if the belt under the washer is twisted or stretched out. Might need replacing.

Remove the pump and motor and turn the tranny coupler counterclockwise until the tranny engages. If you feel roughness while turning the coupler, you have a bad tranny, rather rare though.
