My Whirlpool side by side is freezing foods in the refrigerator section, mostly toward the bottom in the bottom bin. Help!

The fridge gets its cold air from the freezer through a vent between the freezer and fridge. The fan in the freezer blows air through it. There is a flap you adjust with the fridge temp. control. Make sure it opens and closes when the fridge temp is adjusted.

The bottom area where the crispers are usually have an individual control to open a vent to allow more or less cold air into the crisper. Adjust this.

Here are your parts
Replacement parts for WHIRLPOOL ED5FHEXMQ00 | AppliancePartsPros.com

Check out sections 3 and 10, to ensure the linkage is OK so that it is regulating the amount of cold air that enters the fresh food area from the freezer.

Note the colder the freezer the less cold air you want entering the fresh food.

:) I closed the vent at the bottom of the fridge, actually I had to cover it with tape, it would not close off. That solved the freezing in the fridge section. My next question, the temp in the fridge is running at 40 and I have the control knob set all the way down to 1. My question is, is it ok that it is set that low? Do you think there might be a problem with the control.

Thanks
Jeanie

You should have been able to shut it off with the control.

You have to let the unit sit for at least 8 hours to actually see where how the temperatures stabilize.

As long as the temperatures are OK where the dial is set does not matter.
It does sound like the thermostat may have a problem. Check the freezer temp as your fresh food section is dependent on it.
