washer leaking water and oil or grease on the floor under it

Our 10 or so year old GE Profile Prodigy washing machine is leaking a fairly large amount of water, smells like oil or grease and there is oil or grease all over the floor under it. I took the drain hose off and quite a bit of water came out so I'm thinking it's not draining properly. It runs the cycles and spins but when it's in the drain cycle it sounds like the water starts to drain out but maybe runs back into the machine and then all over the floor?? What is the oil or grease from?? :( Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Two things
1. There is quite a bit of water that remains in the system even after the machine finishes pumping. This is what you had when you took off the drain hose.
2. I would recommend you "pop" off the front of this machine (if you do not know how, search this site and others) and then observe the machine running. You should be able to see where the problem is with the leak.
Unfortunately oily water is just plain bad. The best hope is that over time a lot of greasy dirt has accumulated in the underneath of your machine, and when the water comes out (probably from a leaky hose) it is washing that oil and grease out. If this is the case, fixing the hose will put you back in business. More likely is water is getting into your motor/transmission area, in which case a trip to the home store for a new machine will be in order.
Good luck, and please post what you find.

Our poor old washer is now making some awful noises (sqealing and banging) as it runs through the cycles so I'm guessing that the latter is our case and we'll be making a trip to buy a new machine very soon. After looking inside the machine and reattaching hoses, it ran through two small loads and didn't leak so not sure where the water was coming from still. Thank you for your advice.
