Hi- I'm hoping to find out what's up with my GE side-by-side refrigerator.
Once every few days I hear this loud, winding noise from the freezer side of the fridge.
If I had to describe the sound, it would be something like you hear when seated near the engine when flying on a plane. Obviously it's not that loud, but we can hear it when in another room.
I haven't noticed any cooling problems and the ice maker seems to be working fine.
Any ideas?

check for ice in your evaporator fan, located in the freezer side.

I removed the ice container to check the evaporator fan, but didn't notice any place where ice could have fallen through the vents. BUT--- when I slighted pressed the motor casing, I heard the loud winding noise that raised concern. So the question is- what do I do now? Thanks!

Seems like the bearings are bad in the motor AP3875639 These fail due to moisture getting in the motor.
If there is moisture in the freezer, check the door gaskets. If ok, you can add a slinger to the motor shaft to prevent damage. You can make one with an old fan blade, just cut off the blades.
