I have a GE Profile Arctica. All of a sudden, the freezer is staying above 20 degrees and the refrigerator around 50. The "thaw" light is always on. I would turn it off by cycling through the choices but when I close the fridge and reopen it, the thaw light is back on. Even though the contents of the freezer are melting, there is frost at the back near the lamp. I have no idea what's going on. Can you help? lamartin

You probably have an automatic defrost problem. While you're troubleshooting it you can use a hairdryer to speed up the defrosting.
The defrost thermostat is clamped on the coils. behind the back cover in the freezer. It should show continuity with an ohm meter when it's cold and open when warm(above 35 degrees or so).
The defrost heater is at the coils and melts the ice during defrost. Disconnect it and it should show continuity between the two wires.
If both of these parts are ok the problem is the defrost timer(defrost control) Part 801 on the diagram of your sealed system & motherboard.

The best way to check defrost is to remove the cover over the motherboard in the back of the fridg., unplug unit, then remove the 3 pin power connector on the bottom left and stick a jumper wire between pins labled line and def. Plug it in, if it now defrosts, you have a bad motherboard, part 801.
