I noticed shavings from a plastic or teflon ring at the bottom of of the tub. Removal of 5-6 springs, a hose, and 6 screws is required to get to this part.
I am unable to find the part (or the springs) on this website. Can you help?
This part keeps the tub centered when coming to rest, and keeps it from wobbling and banging when spinning.

Go to the general talk section and put in the search box "Maytag Performa washer snubber replacement". This article I wrote is complete and you will not need longer screws or any special tools.
