The Whirlpool washer came with the house so I dont know its exact age. but it sqeals when starting spin up, pretty loud too but goes away once up to speed, I thought it just needed a belt.. alas no belt its direct drive I found. so would it be a clutch? does it use it at spin start? its 45 miles to the nearest repair shop so ideas would be helpful. thanks!

ps.. i washed a comforter in it once and water came out from under it.. thinking maybe just a wee bit too much for it? happened only the one time.

I am guessing that the problem is with the brakes not fully releasing. See the Sticky on direct drive brakes by Richappy at the top of this page.
