The door is open about 2 inches but will not open any further. Cannot close door either. I think my daughter had stated to run the compactor and then tried to open the door to put one more item in. The compactor is now locked up. Any advice please???

Try to push the door in and restart the trash compactor.

Yes, the door will not close...stuck in position about 2" from closing and the bin is empty so I know that nothing is clogging it up.
We have a GE Monogram ZCGS150 Model

Remove the trash compactor from the cabinet. Put it on its side and remove the bottom cover. Inspect the chain and gears. You can lift the ram up by rotating the main gear.

Thank you for the advise....my husband was able to get the door open and reset the switch to get it going again so we're good to go!

I have the exact same compactor with the same problem. GE was no help. Followed Gene's instructions (turned the main gear till the ram lifted out of the way of the bin) and the compactor worked again. You saved me some $$$ (service call). Thanks Gene!
