On my Top Freezer Whirlpool Fridge, I've been having the common problem of Freezer cold/Fridge warm. The weird thing was I had it unplugged for 2 months now, figuring I would fix it when I had the time. When I plugged it back in, after a few hours freezer was cold/fridge was warm. I checked to see if there was any airflow from the airtower through the diffusers. There was very little at all, as if it the evaporator fan wasn't running or airflow had been restricted. So I thought perhaps either the evaporator fan wasn't working or the thermostat/thermostat timer had gone bad.
The bad thermostat/timer idea seemed strange though because usually it takes time for the coils to freeze over as they had on my other fridge (GE profile side-by-side) that had the same issue (i thought). I had at least a week with my SxS of normal use before the frost would build up and prevent the air from flowing.
So I pulled off the evaporator cover to check for frost. Nothing. Then I adjusted the thermostat for the fridge section to 'off.' The condenser fan and compressor kicked off, then back on when I switched the thermostat on again. I checked to see if the door switch was turning the light on and off (just in case anyone would ask me to check that on the forums). It was working. Then I decided to leave the door to the fridge open and see if the evaporator fan would kick on in a few minutes. It never did. I checked to see if there was something blocking the fan from spinning. Nothing. Tried to manually spin it. it would spin just fine so it wasn't locked up.
So I may have already answered my question here but I'd like to get the experts' opinions. Could it be that the evaporator fan motor is bad? Or something else?

Here are your parts Replacement parts for WHIRLPOOL ER2CHMXPQ04 REFRIGERATOR | AppliancePartsPros.comYes the evaporator fan should be on when the compressor and it's fan are on as they are wired in parallel. To confirm this check the voltage across the fan. If it is 120 volts and the fan does not turn then it is toast. I do have an additional concern here as the evaporator coils should have frost on them even with the evaporator fan not running. Recheck them after the compressor has fun a couple hours. Be sure that a defrost cycle has not run as this will have removed all the frost. If there is no frost (cooling) then you probably also have a sealed system problem and this will be an expensive repair. Usually it makes more sense to put those dollars towards a new unit. |

Denman. Thanks for the info. There was frost around the coil where it came in from the the compressor but not on the coils themselves so it wasn't completely accurate to say there was no frost. Upon unplugging, it quickly thawed. And the freezer was quite cool too. It just wasn't flowing through the airtower to the refrigerator section. I'll check the voltage across the fan. if not that, then I may go the replacement route. Thanks again.
