Our Whirlpool gas dryer started making a loud noise that seemed to be coming from the area on top of the dryer, near the dryer timer dial. It also had a slight smell, like a wire burning, when it was running. It never finished drying the last load of wash I put in it and it now runs with no heat coming on. Could this point to a problem with the dryer timer switch?

Hi Annamarie

The first thing I would do in such situation with the burning smell is disassemble the dryer and check for the lint accumulated inside and caught on fire. It could cause a damage to wires, if happened.

Per the manufacturer instructions the dryer has to be cleaned at least every other year.
