Our dishwasher has a problem. The wife told me that the door was "heavy". No breaking was heard but indeed the door has gained weight. I suspect that one or both of the springs that work with the hinges must have either broken or come off however they are held in place. Before I start anything I thought I would see if any of you had any ideas for me. Hopefully this will be a not too complicated repair and we won't need to replace the machine. BTW, the unit functions just fine with the exception of the weighty door. Thanks in advance, ipunty

Hi ipunty What kind or the door panel you have? Regular or wooden? In any case, I would recommend to install an additional heavy duty springs in Tandem to existing. - The part number for the springs AP2660955 - Here are the break down diagrams for the Maytag dishwasher Model DWU8240AAXGood luck. Gene.

Thanks Gene! I went ahead and pulled the dishwasher out some this morning and discovered the left spring had come off the Door Spring Link Link/door spring Part Number: AP178581 made by MAYTAG had broken. The right side was still holding but broken as well. I am not sure that I will put the double spring thing in as the door worked fine before this. Thanks for your help. I am on my way to "fixcovery"! ipunty

Here's an update on the door: It's fixed. I think your idea, Gene, to install the helper springs was a good one but the machine is working w/o their benefit. Just have to take it easy opening as the old springs have lost some of their resilience. In addition the location the unit is in doesn't leave much room for anything else. I had a bit of trouble with a molding screw adjacent to the base but eventually triumphed! <g> Thanks for your help and encouragement. ipunty
