3 weeks ago the dishwasher was working fine. Then the handle broke. The machine sat open and unused for 3 weeks, waiting for the new part. I installed it yesterday. Upon trying to use it today, pressing any button results in "L" flashing in the display for a few seconds. What can I do to fix this new problem?

This happened to us. The L means "Locked".
I am sorry - but I cannot remember what we did to fix. I think we had to hold a button down for several seconds. If you still have your manual - check it out, to see how you can lock it and maybe you will also find how to unlock it.

Yes - this document does tell about the lock feature.
It says to press the Heat/dry pad for 3 seconds - to cancel.
