Gene,
My GE side by side refrigerator with ice maker/water dispencer is having an issue. We noticed that the top shelf in the refrigerator side wasn't cooling, but towards the bottom things stay cooled. On the freezer side we are having the same issue. This is the third time (once every year the last three years) that we have had an issue with our refrigerator but we really like the side by side with the water/ice dispencer and can't afford to buy a new one, so we are forced to fix this one. Do you know what is wrong with it? Is it a costly repair? GE charges $99.95 just to come diagnosis the problem (which they waive if they fix it, but even if they fix it and it's a cheap part, they'll get the $100 for labor). We've had this refrigerator for about 4 1/2 years. Any help appreciated. Thanks!
Tara

Remove the rear cover in the freezer and check how the evaporator coil is covered with snow. If there is no 100% of thin layer of snow then remove the cover on the back of the refrigerator and make sure the condenser coil is clean and the fan next to the compressor is running.
If there is nothing wrong with the condenser then most likely the sealed system is low on Freon.
Gene.
