Gene,
When I turn on my dryer it seems to take a second or so for the drum to engage and makes a loud rattling sound. The sound then continues during the cycle and when it shuts off it makes a louder rattling sound before it stops. It sounds like to me that a belt may be slipping or something. We looked in the back of the dryer while it was running but nothing seemed broken. Could it be in the front somewhere, where we can't see without taking it apart? We don't know anything about dryers but would like to learn and do this ourselves. Any ideas? If you have any diagrams that would be very helpful.

you need to replace the blower wheel. the part # is y303836. you have to take the front off to get to it. also you have to take off the blower housing. there are two 5/16th screws on the left, and two on the right, and the whole blower housing will come off. then take the 1/4 inch screws out that hold the blower cover on, and the one 5/16s screw holding the base of it on, and replace it. tom applianceeducator.com - parts

It is however on a Maytag gas dryer with the model number of LDG9806AAE. Would I have to as well replace the blower wheel?

Take the vent hose off the back of the dryer, and let me know if you have a good air flow when the dryer is running. Tom ApplianceEducator.com
