I removed the electric box cover behind the kick plate and found that the white wire had touched the black power wire. Heat from the black wires in the connector melted the tip of it, fusing the white wire slightly into it. What would this have effected and can it be fixed?

Problem is that when it shorted it probably produced a voltage spike and this often blows the control board. Check that the control board is getting power, if it is and the unit is still totally dead then odds are the board is shot. Here is a manual which should help with your repair.
