I'm trying to troubleshoot an old Kenmore that won't fire up consistently. The ignitor glows, the solenoids clack, but it usually doesn't light and there's a slight smell of gas. (It will ignite maybe once in 20 tries, but goes out after about a minute, and will not light on the first try when cold.) I replaced the coils due to their age (19 years) even though they tested OK with an ohmeter, but there was no change. I then replaced the radiant sensor to no avail, and checked the orifice on the gas valve (clean). Is it possible for the igniter to glow, but still be bad, or is the culprit a bad gas valve?

sometimes the coils are not enough to do the trick. the whole gas valve will have to be replaced. tom [url=]applianceeducator.com - parts[/url]

To any interested parties - the problem was a bad gas valve!
