Even after using a dishwasher cleaner, the water in the bottom ( about 2-3 inches) is really dirty. there looks to be a filter at the rear, but after removing several screws it is still held on by the center post. Any tips??

I cannot find any info on a 2204, please check the model number.

When are you getting the 2-3 inches of water in the unit?
If it is after the cycle is completed then there is a drain problem.
Most GE's leave about a quarter inch of water in the tubs lowest point.

You usually have to remove 2 screws from the top of the filter assembly and the screw/center post which also supports the heater. I am just guessing here.

Remove the sump cover from inside the unit (bottom/center of the tub and check the sump for debris and anything wrapped around the chopper.
Be careful as there is often broken glass in the sump.

If the unit does empty right after a drain cycle check to ensure that the drain hose is looped up about 18 inches higher than where it enters the house plumbing. Could be it is siphoning dirty water back into the unit.
