What exactly is the heat motor, part ap2115048 and how does it supposed to work in conjuction with the ice door wire and spring?

Actually, I know that the heat motor acts like a plunger to open the ice door and that the tension on the wire from the spring helps to close the ice door, but how long is it supposed to take to close the ice door? Pretty quick? My heat motor plunger seems to take a little time to go back to original position. I don't want to order one of these if I don't have to because of expense. Thanks for any help.

There supposed to be about 5 seconds delay.
