I have a 7 year old Kenmore front loading washer. On the regular and perm press cycles, it fills correctly, but then just sits and hums. It will run normally on the delicate cycle, which we have rarely used. On delicate, it runs correctly with all temps or other settings I use.

Recently, I noticed a little water under the machine, so today I pulled it out to investigate, and found that a bolt on the tub had knocked a hole in the plastic piece that surrounds the detergent dispenser. So when the machine would fill, water and detergent were running out onto the tub and down to the floor. I covered the hole with duct tape until I can get a handle on what to do with the machine. It looks like some detergent splashed on some of the connections near the detergent dispenser. Could this cause the problems with the cycles?

I was able to fix this problem. The out of balance drum had slammed into the timer module hard enough to bend the corner where a pigtail plugs into the module. I bent the corner back out and pushed the plug in securely, and now all of my cycles work. I'll still have to replace the plastic shroud underneath the detergent dispenser, where the bolt on the drum smashed a hole, but at least we're able to use the machine, and I didn't have to pay $319 to repairs!
