This refrigerator is in a rental property. The inside of the refrigerator and freezer have been thoroughly cleaned with bleach, as well as the grid. There is no smell inside the refrigerator or freezer. The smell pervades the whole apartment and smells like a dirty diaper. The only place the smell comes from is the grid. It smells worse when you walk in, than it does putting your nose right at the grid. The apartment is clean and well kept and lived in by a meticulous single person.
The smell originated while the tenant was away for a week.
I am at a loss as to what can be done to correct the situation.
Anyone have any experience with a similar problem??

I have no personal experience with this but here is a couple thinks to check.
Remove the kick plate and the lower rear cover if the unit has one. Check the drain pan for something growing in it. Check this area with a flashlight.
Pull the unit forward and check underneath it.
If the unit is next to the sink or a drain pipe check it. Could be sewer gas. Depending on a lot of variables it can travel along a floor or down a wall, when it gets to the fridge compressor/coils there is heat so the rising air will also lift the odor. |
