I just replaced the blower wheel on Maytag dryer. The dryer now is blowing fine (lots of air coming out the back), but the drum isn't turning. When I put tension on the belt with a screwdriver, the drum turns. Prior to replacing the blower wheel, drum worked fine and dryer heats (it wasn't drying bec of the blower wheel).

Belt looks to be on correctly (grooves on top) according to the diagram, but I am looking only at back of dryer through the panel at the bottom.
The belt appears to be in a groove on the top of the drum. Could the belt be out of place on the drum? Do I need to take off the top to see the belt and if it is on correctly? If so, how is the top panel of the dryer removed? I am guess that perhaps in replacing the blower wheel, the drum somehow got the belt out of its proper place.

thanks for any suggestions.

Cflick,

The drive belt is the problem, based on your post.
The Belt cannot be in the "groove" molded into the drum, it needs to be a 1/2" in front of the groove, on the flat part of the drum.
You don't need to remove the top to readjust/position the belt.
Remove the belt from the idler and motor pulleys, properly position the belt on the top of the drum, reach under the drum on both sides of the drum bottom and reinstall the belt on the pulleys. Once you've got the belt installed, slowly turn the drum(by hand)a couple of revolutions to align the belt, and check that the belt is in position, also check and insure the belt is not twisted, then install the front tumbler support.

You'll be fine after that.

thanks for your help. 1/2 inch in front -- I assume means towards the front of the dryer. Can I make all the adjustments from the panel in the back lower right corner, or do I need to get access from the front by removing the front panal again.

Thanks again.

Cflick,

Correct, the belt should be 1/2" in front of the groove, towards the front of the machine.

I imagine it could be done from the inspection panel on the back of the dryer, it may be a little rough. I've always accessed the belt, motor etc. from the front, just the way I was trained I guess.

Good Luck,
:) :) :)
