My timer on my Dryer suddenly stopped working a few weeks back. The dryer works fine except that the timer won't advance and shut the thing off. I assume the timer is bad, but maybe there are other reasons that may cause this to happen.....Any suggestions....

Have you tried running it on timed dry.

Now will the timer advance.
Timed Dry uses a different circuit path to get power to the timer motor than Auto cycles

Here is your parts breakdown
Model LER5636JQ0

I could not find a JQ0 but here is a KQ0 wiring diagram. Yours should be close.

It shows the 2 paths for timer motor voltage TIMER SWITCH TM/WB/OR

Try an Auto cycle Low Heat. If it does not advance odds are high that the timer is shot.
In this mode timer advances when heater shuts off during a cycle.

A more positive way to test it is to measure for voltage across the timer motor in Timed Dry. If it is getting 120 volts and not advancing, the timer is shot.
