I'm about to replace my old Jenn Air cooktop with a GE PP989SNSS (also downdraft). The documentation on the GE calls for 6" vent pipe, but 5" is what is currently in place and I'd rather not replace it.

The total length is less than 10 feet - would the 5" pipe suffice (and not damage the blower), or must I put in 6"? What's common practice in this scenario?

The guy at the store says people do it all the time, but if there's a problem with the blower my warranty won't cover it...

Thanks.

Here is the operators manual for this unit from the GE site
http://products.geapplia...&Name=49-80517-1.pdf

It seems to indicate that 5 inch can be used as long as you do not exceed 100 equivalent feet. It gives a table to figure out equivalent feet.

I do not recommend using the 5 inch because quite frankly I do not want to take responsibility if something goes wrong in the future.
But the final decision is yours!!!

One thing to keep in mind is that a 5 inch is 30% smaller than a 6 inch re:area.
