Hello:

Our Whirlpool direct drive unit works sometimes, but when it doesn't, nothing works. It won't agitate, pump, or spin. The motor does make a sound as if it is trying to turn. It will sometimes run normal and then all of a sudden lock up. If we let the motor run long when it's locked up, we can detect a slight burning smell.

We replaced the switch first and then we replaced the coupler. The old coupler looked good, but nothing changed with the new. Now I opened it back up and hand turned the pump and it turned okay. I also turned on the part between the transmission and the bottom of the tub and it seemed to turn okay.

What do you think the problem might be?

I think your motor is in the process of failing. See if there is a tech sheet inside the console that will give you the readings on the windings.

Also check to make sure that the new coupling is not binding and something is not jamming the pump.
