Ok so I think I know what is wrong but would like some more opinions. My child left the freezer door open for about 2 hours
now the sides of the freezer are hot to the touch is it because the freezer had to work so hard to keep cold or is it something else I should be worried about?

Cannot really say as only time will tell.
Monitor it fairly often.
If the unit is self-defrosting it may take a couple defrost cycles to totally defrost the unit.
A lot of warm moist air will have entered the unit and condensed on the evaporator coils.

Probably would be a good idea to check/clean the condenser coils if you can get at them.
Also if it has a condenser/compressor fan make sure it is running when the compressor is on.
Note: It may run all the time, depends on the unit.
