I've just had the compressor overload/start device (part number 2220498) replaced with a new part (part number 4387535 which has separate overload and relay devices. The person who replaced these for me did not connect up the run capacitor. The compressor seems to run ok without it. Is it needed?

Yes, you need to install it between the run and start pins of the compressor. It adds torque to the compressor motor and can prevent compressor failure. If the repair person left it off, get him/her to install it.Without it, your compressor may fail without warning. The parts that where put in are not the original factory ones AP3696670 The klixon that was used may not protect the compressor from failure if it was not the original klixon The ptc device used, however, is a very reliable device.

Thanks for your response Richappy. The new parts that were put in appear to be a correct replacement based on the part number printed on the old start device.
It looks like I have two options. The first being get the combined start device as per the original part and make up a new connector (the original one was cut off). Do you know which way round the red and white wires would go?
The other option would be to make up some flying leads to connect the capacitor to the replacement parts. Would you happen to know which of the four tabs on the start relay I would connect it to?

I would wire in the capacitor to the ptc device. If you look at it there will be a tab on the top and pins on each side. The pins on the same side are shorted together. You hook up the capacitor between the two sides, these both go directly to the start and run pins of the compressor.
