I have an older top load whirlpool. Belt broke on me today and I have a washer half full of water and wet clothes. The belt was prob. original and it did have that wonderful burning rubber smell before I got down there to check things out. I'd be willing to try to replace the belt if that's all that's involved. Is it likely that there's anything else going on and how do I tell if there is?

Hi,

Your belt drive whrilpool is atleast 20 years old.
At best if it only the belt it's a pain to change.
Before you change the belt you will want to check the water pump to make sure it is not locked up.

Take hold of the water pump pulley and see if you can turn it by hand. If not the pump will also have to be replaced.

Good luck,
AJ
