Dear AppliancePartsPros,

I have a Maytag Nepture MDE4000AYQ that seems to heat just fine.

However, when the dryer is running, there is a slipping sound.

It's as if the motor is working but the sound the dryer is making sounds as if there's a loose belt between the motor and the drum and the belt is slipping.

I'm a good DIY person but I've never cracked open a dryer.

If you know what the part is, how do I open the dryer to replace the defective part?

Thanks,
Andy

I would pull out all the front panels plus the sub-panel that supports the drum.
Inspect the drum slides that support the drum.

2 days ago, I had a Neptune, where I had to replace the belt, and then I ran a test cycle with wet clothes, and I found the tention spring that is attached to the idler pully was worn. Once I replaced it, everything was fine. Check it out. Tom ApplianceEducator.com

On the rare times when the spring is too loose, the belt will just burn off the pulley, but never make a sound, just smoke.
I have heard a lot of GE dryers where the front slides will make a slipping, scaping sound.

What is the best way to get to insides of the dryer?

The Neptune has some screws in the back and on the sides at the bottom of the dryer.

The outer "shell" of the dryer is attached to the back panel (at least from the two sides of the dryer). From the look of it, the only way to get the shell off is to remove all the screws from the back and bottom sides of the dryer.

Then the whole shell comes off and you can gain access to the inside of the dryer.

Does this sound right? I don't want to take apart the whole dryer when I really needed just a small panel.

Thanks,
Andy

Guys,

I figured there was only one way to learn how to take a dryer apart so I dove in and started taking screws off.

Eventually, I learned that you can pop off the front plate and see just about everything inside the dryer. I put enough screws back in so that I could run the dryer with the front panel off and see what is going on.

I learned that the belt isn't slipping against the tumbler like I first thought. There's a slight vibration of the idler pully. I'm not 100% sure that it's the idler pully causing the vibration. The idler spring is tight enough so that the belt does not slip.

Basically, everything is vibrating around the motor and along the idler pully. After the dryer runs for a few minutes the vibrating gets slightly quieter but the vibrations are still there. Maybe the bearings are going bad in the idler pully? I would think the symptom of bad bearings would be squeaking....

The belt does not seem to slip at all and there isn't any significant wear on the belt.

Ideas?

Andy

I would put some NON-detergent oil on the pulley bearing. They should sell it at this parts site.
If that fixes it, I would replace the idler pulley. if not, you may have a bad spot on the belt.

Guys,

I finally had time to take the dryer apart and inspect the pulley.

I took the belt off the pulley and spun it. It turned okay but had a slight squeak to it so I put some penetrating oil on both sides of the axle and that seemed to do the trick. I also tightened the arm holding the idler pulley and that seemed to take care of the vibration.

After I put it all together, it all runs like new.

Thanks guys for all your advice and help.

I've never cracked open a dryer before so I appreciate the help.

Thanks,
Andy
