It makes a loud clunking noise when it turns off.

One of your internal compressor springs has broken. One fix is to just replace compressor under warranty. If warranty has expired you could remove compressor mounting tabs and tilt compressor till the clunk is either gone or more tolerable. Just be thank full the noise is not a full time rattle!!
