i am getting a new fridge and the current one be in service for 18 yrs. i feel that the line should be replaced. when we did it 18 years ago we used a pinch valve down stairs on the copper water line and the plastic water line that feeds the ice maker . that plastic line i would like to replace. is it a pain to replace it? any plastic line will work?

The water line definitely has to be replaced. How long is it?

I would recommend to use a copper 1/4" tube instead of plastic. It is much more dependable. The part number for the kit is AP3219861 and it has everything you need to connect the refrigerator to the water line.
