when I press the start knob the motor will hum but nothing else happens. the drum is difficult to turn by hand. I have already replaced the thermal fuse and thermostat without result. what should I look at next

If the drum is hard to turn then perhaps it is stalling the motor.
Try turning the drum on a couple other dryers to get a feel for it.

If it is indeed too hard to turn then you will have to open it up and find out why.
Could be the front drum support glides or the rear support rollers (Section 5 in the parts).
Also check the idler pulley and the motor bearings.

If it is not that hard to turn the drum then odds are you need a new motor.
