My built in Hotpoint oven is probably from the 1970's. It is slightly smaller than a full size oven. The broiler element went out and I ordered part #: WB44X173 as a replacement. Man it's hard to find parts for these older appliances. The new broiler element is 1 1/2 inches wider than the broken one. If I install the replacement part it will be approximately 2 inches from the sides of the oven. Will this cause an overheating issue or am I safe to install the new, wider, broiler element?

What is important is the end that goes into the back of the oven. Make sure that it is the same as the original as to the element spacing to the oven back plate. And even more importantly the distance it goes into the back.
You do not want to install it and have it short out on the units rear cover plate. |
