My Amana suddenly decided to keep stuff cold in the freezer but not on top in the fridge (freezer is below the fridge). I took it apart and cleaned out a ton of dust/dirt from the bottom coils. Took the panel off inside the freezer and the coils behind the panel are completely iced and plugged. Is the likley culpret the defrost timer, the thermostat, something else? Thanks.

It's usually one of three things, the defrost timer, defrost thermostat or the element. Some models have a defrost control (control board) First for a temp fix unplug the unit, remove the back panel in the freezer use a hair drier to thaw ALL the ice out. Look for your defrost heater see if it looks discolored or if you can see a visible break. Also look for the Def thermostat, a little round thing that has a popup on top and two wires going to it, it the top is popped or it looks chared that's probably your problem. Put it back together and plug it in. It will cool for upto 2 weeks if your lucky(time to get parts in!) I'll look at the breakdown to see part numbers. Hope that helps Nat

Gopherguy... Chances are it's not your element due to the type it is. The Defrost thermostat is part number AP175103 Defrost timer Part AP98191 (since your frig has this type of timer. located on the back near the compressor) Try this first Leave the machine plugged in and turn the little red "knob" a little at a time until your frig kicks off. then wait and listen for popping ice, maybe some sizzling if so then is' defrosting and should kick back on in about 30 minutes. If not then defrost your frig manually as I stated before and we will figure out which part is out. Nat
toni_ post your model number please
