I know that is not much of a description so you may want to try a couple other dryers first. Yours may be a little stiffer than new ones, it's just because it is better made.
If OK
Hold the door switch closed.
Start the dryer.
Rotate the drum by hand in the correct direction.
Watch your knuckles.
If it starts up, it is a good indication that your motor is shot.
This may require two people.
My wife and I tried this but were unable to get the drum tumbling.

I tried shorting the wires together, but it made no difference. The dryer still made the same sound when we pressed the button (to start tumbling) but the drum did not tumble.

At this point, we're searching craigslist and considering visiting a local used appliance store to shop for a replacement.

We'd love to get a new dryer (and washer; even though ours still works, it's old and has a small basin), but we just can't afford a new, shiny appliance right now. We'll have to stick to used for the time being.

Yesterday, I came accross a old Maytag dryer on a service call, where the motor came on, but the drum would n ot turn, and it turned out to be the idler pully was bad, and would not turn, so the drum did not turn. Tom ApplianceEducator.com

The belt definitely had not snapped, but I didn't have enough light to check if it had stretched. It seemed tight from what I could see, though.

How would I go about checking the idler pully?

And can you all offer any advice on purchasing used appliances?

Take the back access panel off, and remove the belt, and there is the idler pully. Turn it, and see if it turns freely.

I have absolutely no idea how to take the back panel off.

Taking the front panel off the DE308 was simple enough, though.
