i was drying clothes the dryer stopped and it smelt like it was burning. the top was very hot. i let it sit for an hour and tried to restart it but it wont come on. but you can hear the timer ticking. what could be wrong with it?

If the top got very hot this means one of wo things. Either the thermostat is stuck on, which is unlikely, or else there is lint inside the dryer and its internal venting which is blocking air flow, which is very likely. When it gets hot this will cause a non-resettable thermal fuse/thermostat to blow.

Open it up, clean it out and check the thermostats/thermal fuses for continuity You will probably find the problem.
