The dishwasher is "working", but all of the lights on the touchpad control do not light when touched. If the buttons do not light, should I assume that the function is not working? Should I just replace the touchpad control panel?

Here is your parts breakdown Model MDB9600AWBNo light does not necessarily mean that the function does not work. The control board must activate the lights (LEDs). Could be you just have a dirty edge connector on the ribbon cable. Or a crack in one of the ribbon cable's tracks. Tech sheet shows usage of pins 5 to 12 so I think the LED's are run using the other pins on this plug. Remove the ribbon cable from the control board, it's connection end can be cleaned with electronics cleaner or isopropyl alcohol, just make sure all the solvent has evaporated before reinserting. Can also be cleaned with a pencil eraser, do not use an ink eraser, it is too abrasive. If the ribbon is clear plastic sometimes you can see a crack using a magnifying glass. Check the receptacle end for any signs of corrosion, it can be ceaned using one of the above solvents and a tooth brush. I also am haveing trouble with my touch control panel. It first started with showing only parts of the numbers in the minutes left display. Now it will not start when the start button is pushed and will not let you select normal wash, light wash, and other functions. It does let you light up heavy wash and autocontrol but still won't start when you press start.
I did get it to do a store demo mode; only some of the LED's light up and will not stop demo when you press start/cancel.
Is ther a way for an amateur like me to tell whether I need a new touch panel or a new control board? Thanks

If cleaning and checking for a bad/cracked track do not work you need a meter to check the switches for continuity, also have to check to see that none of the switches stay closed.
Unless you find a fault with the keyboard it is a guess as to which part is no good. In your case you have multiple faults that are not related to a common track on the ribbon cable so I would guess the control board is a problem, but this is just a guess! |

Roaches had made a mess inside the control board. Isopropyl alcohol and an old toothbrush cleaned up the connector.
