So after the center nut comes out of the top of the impeller (black plactic nut), should the peller slip upwards and come out. And is this the part that is keeping the top of the pump/filter unit on? I can not pull that black plastic part (impeller)? off, as I am afraid to pry on the plastic parts.

You're going to need it. But to answer your question, yes, once you remove the screw holding the impeller onto the motor shaft, the impeller should eventually be able to pull the impeller off the shaft and continue the teardown on the pump. They are hard to remove, and sometimes they sieze to the shaft and have to be broken up, or cut off with a Dremel tool. What was actually wrong with the dishwasher ? You may have started in the wrong direction ? :) :) :)

"The Reason" ... I was experiencing the lack of good cleaning. After reading several posts I gathered that the water pressure was weakened. I followed the discussions here to this problem. I have removed the impeller and cleaned everything. I am getting much better dishwasher cleaning now. My method of removing the impeller bolt was different to any other posts, I found. I used a high speed impact wrench (nut driver air tool). I also noticed that others were in debate over the rotation direction of the bolt. It was counter clockwise for loosening.
