my washer doesnt spin and the agitator doesnt move back and forth-it only moves in one directions and it makes a clicking sound. this machine is 28 yrs old. the motor goes on. but is sounds as if a gear is not engaged. thought it migh be a motor coupler, but canot seem to find one on this unit.

That's because yours is the old belt-drive model. It could be a bad "wig-wag" , but further diagnosis is necessary.

Sorry: I kinda got in a hurry and didn't fully explain. The wig-wag is a nickname given to the dual solenoid shift control for the transmission. It's so called, because in normal operation, it wiggles back and forth as the machine is in operation. The most common failure is caused by broken wires, causing a "no agitate" or a "no spin" condition.
It's an obsolete machine; but parts are still avaiable. If you have the time for the back and forth nature of the forum, we can talk you through a diagnosis and (possible) repair of your machine.

Thanks. Your answer was very helpful. Do you think its worth investing the time to possibly fix this machine-up until now I never had a problem.

This was a very good machiine. It is obsolete. Parts are still available. If it is clean, has no rust, and was running well before now, it may be worth at least diagnosing. Keep in mind, though, that you can also find very good replacements on sites such as Craigslist for great prices.

where do I start with diagnosing the problem?the machine is clean with no rust. (I have been on several web sites-consumers report and others and can not find any washer that reviewers rave about.also most users complain that after 5-6 yrs they encounter problems)

Let's start over with what the machine will not do. Try it in all the wash cycles.

The agitator does not move back and forth-it moves in one direction stops and moves again in the same direction.Every once in a while it does do a back and forth and then again the one direction movement. The water drains but doesnt spin at all. I heard a clicking sound. what is the part # for the solenoid?
