I was having heating issues with my electric whirlpool dryer so i changed the thermal cut off, cycling thermostat, high limit thermostat and heating element. After connecting the wires and plugging the machine in i pushed the power button and there was an immediate electrical surge (sparks). It did damage to only the thermal cut off which was fried and the wire leads were melted going into the thermal cut off. The only thing i can think of is i must of mixed up a wire connection somewhere. I'm pretty sure the thermal cut off was correct. There was only two wires red and a red/white, but they are pretty far apart, so i don't think i got those wrong. I'm pretty sure the wires to the high limit thermostat are correct becuase there are three wires (but the terminals are different sizes so you cant put the wong wire leads into these terminals. The cyling thermostat has 4 different terminals. There are to purple wires (smaller leads) which i assume can be interchanged and a red wire and red/white with larger leads. If I reversed the red and red/white wire into the terminals of the cycling thermostat would it cause a electrical surge to the thermal cut off? Another thing that i noticed is that the thermal cut off and cycling thermostate can be screwed in to ways (meaning is it possible to put those on upside down to cause this wire mix up? I put them both on so the letter fhs were reading corretyl)

A model number may help others help you.

In general it does not matter which wire goes where on a 2 connector thermostat.

Your 4 connector cycling thermostat is a different matter.
2 of the connectors are for the contacts (usually red wires).
The other 2 are for the thermostat's internal heater.

Remove both wires from the thermostats and measure the thermostat connectors to case/frame, all should be infinite ohms.

If not perhaps one of them has a contact that has shorted to the case.
