The starting device to the compressor (Part Number: AP3885081)
stared on fire and I began to wonder if it did so because the compressor is bad? I ordered the replacement starting device and relay, overload and cover kit as well. Can the burnt starting device mean I have a bad compressor?

It is very common for the start device to burn out, and sometimes they burn with smoke and fire.
When you pull everything apart, you might need a dremel tool to grind round a compressor pin.
If you are using the same factory part, this may happen again. If you are using the AP3083556 kit supplied by this site, use the black start device and the klixon, thin, overload device, they are more reliable. Best to put a 1000 joule surge protector in the wall outlet for this; select one at Wall Mart that's made for appliances.

You will need an ohm meter.

I will walk you through this but you must have an ohm meter!! You can pick up a cheap one at Wall mart, or a better one at Lowe's. You must verify things before plugging in the fridg, or you will burn out the compressor.

Very good. The three compressor pins are in a triangle, top pin is usually common, bottom two, which are start and run pins and in a row are on the bottom, is this correct.
