I have a whirlpool washer, top load, and nedd to replace the coupling. Questions is what tools are needed and do I have to remove anything i.e engine or transmission. Thank you for your help.

You need no special tools, Whirlpool made it so!! Go to Appliance repairs, Appliancehelp, Appliances, repairs to dryers washers dishwashers fridges repairs microwaves ge maytag kenmore frigidaire westinghouse inglis, appliance how to take apart information, purchasing an appliance help, model number help, you will find specific info there.
When you get to the tranny, just pound in the new coupler and turn clockwise.
If is very hard to turn with one hand, you have other problems like dragging brake shoes or something caught in the tub.
I always check the motor current in spin when done, should be around 9 amps.
You can click on your model # above to get your coupler.
